I always liked the word “interstitial.” It used to pop up occasionally in my critical theory books in reference to abstract in-betweens that post-structuralist theorists liked to expand on so very much (evidently the world’s demand for abstract concepts is beginning to outstrip supply). I always thought it had surgical-Tim-Burton-esque connotations too. [...]

My writing project didn’t end with NaNoWriMo, but then it hardly began with it, either. Every time I write a sentence down, I go back and hack away at the rest of it until I remember that the rest of my plot is in shambles anyway and I should probably fix that first. [...] Whenever I come back to Shenzhen from Hong Kong I stop by a magazine stand to pick up some English reading to while away the time spent changing subway/train lines and standing in line in customs. My preferences: GQ and Wired. But it has to be an American – not British – edition [...] This blog isn’t dead, I promise. The combination of dead laptop (which makes it inconvenient to come here to the office to post) and additional writing work from NaNoWriMo just crowded out the time it took to write magnum opus posts all the time – and while I could twitter away various opinions and [...] I have been wanting to watch television in Mandarin for a while so that I could improve my vocabulary, but the news isn’t suitable (the words are too hard; I can’t imagine translating ‘bilateral trade negotiations’ on my iTouch and feeling very much accomplished) and the Chinese soaps I find on TV are too silly [...] Why hasn’t anybody else thought of that pun before? My parents returned to the States on Saturday, which is good because I think they were getting tired of traveling and also because their Internet visits generate the majority of this blog’s traffic volume. I was getting kind of sad seeing a flat line of single [...] NaNoWriMo is slow trudging. I keep finding that I have more and more ideas for what I want to write, but I feel limited by where I am in the story right now. Actually, I feel constrained by the concept of plot entirely – as if what I want to write isn’t what [...] The hard drive seems to have cooled down and it’s behaving itself now. Good thing too; I had meant for this China year to also squeeze out the last bit of life on this old laptop, but going without a laptop for most of the year would be unpleasant! Just about 1000 words today. [...] I’m going to do it. It’s going to happen. I swear. Maybe I’ll give up all my other hobbies here but if I actually get this done, it’ll have been worth it! Last week I got two small, baby turtles from a street vendor. Their names have alternated from “Emeril and Dolce” to “Elmo and Remington” to “Bebop and Rocksteady” (follow the link if you are not of my generation/are Chinese) and are currently “red turtle” and “green turtle.” They are sleepy things, usually sitting [...] |
