The hard drive seems to have cooled down and it’s behaving itself now. Good thing too; I had meant for this China year to also squeeze out the last bit of life on this old laptop, but going without a laptop for most of the year would be unpleasant! Just about 1000 words today. [...] I’m going to do it. It’s going to happen. I swear. Maybe I’ll give up all my other hobbies here but if I actually get this done, it’ll have been worth it! Last week I got two small, baby turtles from a street vendor. Their names have alternated from “Emeril and Dolce” to “Elmo and Remington” to “Bebop and Rocksteady” (follow the link if you are not of my generation/are Chinese) and are currently “red turtle” and “green turtle.” They are sleepy things, usually sitting [...] One of the biggest complaints of previous Asian-American teachers in China that I have heard of is that we have a relatively difficult time securing extra-legal (to use a euphemism) employment that most other foreign teachers enjoy. That is, because of the technical restrictions on our visas, it is illegal for us to teach [...] My post titles are getting intentionally stranger and stranger as I think about what would most poetically capture what I want to say. I disclaimed a long time ago that this blog would be an “experimental prose testing ground,” though so far I’ve kept that largely at bay (both for coherency and intellectual property!) But [...] (Is anybody old enough to remember MS-DOS? The command prompt OS that existed before Windows? When doing a report on Microsoft once in grade school I read that Bill Gates actually bought the code for MS-DOS from the guy who wrote it, who had instead called it QDOS. That was literally short [...] The writing project is going very well, even though I still haven’t actually gotten around to bashing any of it out. It takes an hour to get to Chinese classes in Futian using the combination of Bus 72 and Line 1 of the Shenzhen Metro, and I use the time to sit there and [...] Blogged out for a bit. I’m just taking things as they come and going along with the flow…it’s nice. I’ll start writing again in a few days or whenever the mood strikes me again. For now, I want to try to focus on just living and studying and practicing and such. Besides musing on the distasteful news of my brother’s university enjoying a fluke football win against my alma mater that happened while I was unconscious (which, I contend, should somehow diminish its significance), I hadn’t planned on doing much today.
